My store closes at 6 o’clock. After all is said and done and I’ve locked up, I usually leave at about 6:45.
Today, at 6:05, as I am making my rounds, I hear a voice behind me. “Could you help me? I have a few questions.”
Two roads diverge here.
The first road: “We are actually getting ready to close if you would like to bring your final purchases up to the register.”
Or the road less traveled– “Yes ma’am, how can I help you?”
I chose the latter. The ladies question was fairly simple and, at the cost of an extra five or six minutes, I was able to better inform our customer about their purchase.
In regards to the book The War of Art, what we are fighting in instances like these is resistance. We have the opportunity in every customer interaction to work for something greater and the only thing stopping us is an ever-present force that only exists to keep us from what we could create called resistance.
Today I was finished at 6:50.
